Turbidity Silt Curtains

Turbidity Curtains also referred to as Silt Curtains, Silt Barriers, or Turbidity Barriers, Turbidity Curtains or Floating Barriers are designed to deflect, contain and isolate sediment in order to stop or reduce suspended or floating particles from migrating from one area to another.  Applications include Dredging, Marine Construction, Wastewater Ponds, Lagoons, and Rivers to name a few.  Material of construction ranges from PVC for oil booms to woven and non woven geotextile fabrics with varying degrees of filtration based on flow rates and turbidity control.

Key Features and Functions:
  • Floating Barrier:

Turbidity curtains are made of a flexible, impermeable material that floats on the water’s surface.

  • Ballast System:

They are weighted at the bottom with a ballast chain to keep the curtain vertical and prevent sediment from moving underneath.

  • Containment:

The curtain encloses a work area, preventing sediment from escaping into larger water bodies.

  • Sediment Settling:

Turbidity curtains allow sediment to settle out of suspension within the enclosed area, preventing it from being carried away by currents.

  • Types:

Different types of turbidity curtains are available, each designed for specific water conditions, such as calm waters or those with moderate to strong currents.

Applications:
  • Construction Projects:

Turbidity curtains are commonly used during construction activities near water, such as dredging, shoreline work, or pile driving, to minimize the impact on water quality.

  • Environmental Protection:

They help protect aquatic ecosystems from sedimentation and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.

  • Waterbody Management:

Turbidity curtains can be used to manage sediment in various water bodies, including lakes, rivers, and estuaries.

Benefits:
  • Reduced Sedimentation:

They effectively contain sediment, preventing it from spreading and impacting water quality.

  • Protection of Aquatic Life:

By minimizing sedimentation, turbidity curtains help protect aquatic ecosystems and organisms.

  • Cost-Effective Solution:

Turbidity curtains can be a cost-effective way to manage sediment compared to other sediment control methods.

  • Compliance with Regulations:
They help ensure compliance with environmental regulations related to sedimentation control.
